-------------------------------------------------------------------------- putting on a front, you might like that BUT WILL YOU LIKE ME WHEN I'M REAL -------------------------------------------------------------------------- mt. olympus was the home to all gods. it is said that all gods resided in this magnificent structure unless they had some other residence such as neptune and pluto. what mortals didn't know was that not many gods actually made mt. olympus their permanent residence. some liked to roam, some of them liked to find their own place to live, and some, like herself, used mt. olympus as a checkpoint. she'll wander and travel through the mortal realm at her leisure and discretion, but minerva always made sure to check in to her childhood home regularly. she hated being left out of the loop, and although she hated to be involved with the petty feuds that occur regularly, she wanted to remain up to date with the affairs of her large and very dysfunctional family. she had planned to stay only for a few days, and after she got her information, get the hell out of mt. olympus as soon as possible, instead, minerva had lingered on.
the goddess didn't exactly know why though. she didn't have a lot of friends here in the gods' dwelling place and most of them annoy her with their antics anyways. she preferred to be on her own, wandering the mortal realm and fulfilling her duties properly. she rarely had time to play around with mortals and their humdrum existence - although she wouldn't admit it, but manipulating them to her whim was quite fun. minerva sighed. she had a lot of work to do, weaving to oversee, businesses to tend to, medicines for people to discover, things like that and much, much more. instead, she was sitting idly in the garden of venus, staring at the pretty blooms.
that was another thing about mt. olympus. the luxuries that surrounded them made them lazy. in the comforts of their own homes, they didn't realize the needs of the mortals. if they would step out and travel for a few weeks they'll see that the need to do their jobs and do them now was of utmost importance. every time she returned to mt. olympus she was tempted and tempted to stay. sometimes, she did, for a season or two, but then wanderlust kicked in and she was off again. it was either the wanderlust set in or the fact that juno and jupiter get into a particularly fierce disagreement that usually forces minerva to flee. even though minerva wasn't technically her daughter, juno didn't hate her like she does all of jupiter's other children. she didn't know why, but minerva was wise enough to not question the queen of gods. but because of the fact that she was the only one that both juno and jupiter likes, she was usually called upon to decide who was right. how she hated that role.
all the other gods either respected her and left her to her tasks or mocked her for her prudish and uptight personality. minerva rolled her eyes and scoffed. they just didn't realize how hard her life was. she was goddess of everything that's worth anything to the mortals. she had a lot on her plate and she didn't have time for 'fun'. her form of fun would be if she could have a day to herself just to settle down and relax. she didn't need their drinks, their sex, or their petty affairs. besides, she wasn't the wild type anyways. she respected their lifestyle and let them be, but some gods - or rather goddesses - wouldn't let her be.
that goddess would be venus.
she would be the most irresponsible and whimsical goddess out there. sure, love and beauty was all great, but how important would that be compared to warriors, poetry, medicine, wisdom, commerce, and crafts? venus always floats in to her space and acts like the vain and petty goddess that she is. she tells her to 'let her hair down' and 'lose that cursed virgnity of hers', just the thought of what venus said to her over the years brought a fierce scowl on her face. some people just don't understand the lengths that she, minerva, had to go through to make the mortal realm a better place, so some people could have mortals to spread the love to. "I am so underappreciated, it's almost pathetic." minerva groused grumpily.
she stood up. now that she thought about it, it wasn't a very smart idea to sit in the garden of venus. no doubt, she was going to show up sooner or later, and minerva did not intend to be around when she finally made her grand appearance. they always ended up squabbling whenever they crossed paths, and minerva didn't like that. she was supposed to be wise and mature, after all. it was definitely time to retire to her chambers or at the very least relocate to the watching pool. as she rounded the corner, minerva caught sight of the very last person she wanted to see. and by the look on venus's face, she didn't seem too happy to see her either. but it was too late to turn back without being called rude. stifling a longsuffering sigh, minerva walked forward slowly, a firm smile on her face. she was going to be pleasant even if it killed her. "wonderful afternoon, isn't it, venus? the flowers are looking particularly lovely. hopefully, venus would decide that she would be pleasant as well.

_______________________________________________ venus was being venus, dancing around, entertaining jupiter and juno, her movements graceful and enthralling. she was graceful, enthralling. that radiant smile was fixated on her heavenly features, bliss and excitement twinkling in those bright blue eyes. the harp was being played, seemingly by itself, giving her dance the tune. of course she didn't necessarily need one, but the harmony was always appreciated. long lashes fluttered close as she floated across the large throne room one more time, before the melody ended. roxxy came to a stop in a deep bow. then, she stood, beaming at her parents. "jupiter, juno, i hope i have pleased you by my entertainment."
she threw a genuinely warm smile at them, before pirouetting away, humming her own composition. the arpeggio of her laughter could be heard down the halls as she lightly stepped her way towards own palace. as she came out of her parents' abode she looked up to see her own glory-ridden vastness of her own home. it had "property of venus" written all over the place. beautiful royal purples adorned the house in several fashions, such as the purple flowers that grew in the soild around her house. she had even created her own flower, a purple rose. the rose was so purple, it matched the fitted gown she was wearing now. she smiled at the thought. that reminded her. she needed to go to her gardens, as that's where xeratez was sleeping.
oh my, how she missed her pet. she'd been so busy the last few days that she hadn't been able to devote her attention to him. she sighed at that and on sudden inspiration, picked up the other side of the gown that wasn't split and went into a full run, her long legs pointing, stretching, moving in the rythmical beat of natural consequence. she wasn't out of breath as she came to the entrance of her great home. going straight through, she saw the little creatures of mt. olympus and smiled at them brightly. they were so lovely. without further delay, she rapidly walked through her house to exit on the other side, where her garden was. she was instantly greeted by the sweet, unearthly smell of her blooming blossoms and the lushness of it all. her gardens were open to everyone and most deities actually came to visit them, being as they were amongst the largest and most grand.
she had let her down down long ago, and as she walked barefooted through her gardens, she mentally called for her gryphon. xeratez my dear....where are you? please come here. i miss you. she heard the intelligence of her creation prod her mind. she smiled and knew he was coming. there was a bend in the path up ahead, and around that bend was lots of little places to sit and simply relax from the day's events. that's where she wanted to go. but as she approached, she nearly collided with a fast-walking minerva. the first reaction of the hard-hearted goddess was the lighting fire in venus's light blue eyes. no immortal in the world could count how many times their meetings had led to arguements. and the start of the verbal conflicts were in equal share between the two.
but this time, the goddess of love and beauty was caught off guard by minerva's response to her sudden appearance. she had been expecting a sharp retort, in the least expense. minerva was trying to be nice to her? oh....i wonder if she broke something....oh well, at least she's trying! venus was quick to forget the past and start anew when given a chance. here, she made the most of it how she knew to. her smile was wary at first. it was like her mouth hadn't been used to smiling at minerva in so long that it had forgotten how. but then, she chuckled in relief at the non-arguementativeness of the moment and her smile became white, bright, and real. friendly, sisterly even. "why, hello minerva! it is a rather beautiful afternoon. and you're quite right. the flowers seem exceptional today. ceres must be happy."
she chuckled quietly at the thought. then, her acute senses picked up the faint sound of large, beating wings. xeratez was to be there soon. "were you just leaving? surely you need relaxation, being as you're so busy all the time!" it was a tease. a playful tease at that. venus had dared to withdraw the "you're so busy" card, and had hopes that it wouldn't the so far good encounter with her half-sister.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------- putting on a front, you might like that BUT WILL YOU LIKE ME WHEN I'M REAL -------------------------------------------------------------------------- venus seemed to be in a good mood as well for she even tried to give her a smile, no matter how forced it was. her own was probably just as forced after all. minerva let a bit of the tension leave her when venus took her offered safe topic of conversation. there was nothing wrong with talking about flowers. neither of them were responsible for their growth so it wouldn't offend either of them. minerva refrained from rolling her eyes. they were half-sisters and yet the only thing they can talk about together would be flowers and the weather. it was rather sad. well, as long as venus wasn't averse to her presence, she'll see what will happen. venus chattered happily about the flowers. minerva only frowned at the brief mentioning of ceres. her aunt was a prick in her side for quite some time ever since she insisted on throwing those damned fits every time prosperina returned to the underworld to her husband. honestly, what was wrong with ceres, prosperina and pluto are happy together so she should just let them be. it only added to her work load anyways.
"yes, well, those mortals are quite needy you know." minerva answered breezily, her tone rife with humour. she was a little peeved that her half-sister had managed to remind her that she did have work to do and that she shouldn't be sitting around doing nothing. however, it was good that her half-sister understood how busy she was. at least someone realized that she had a lot to do and even if she didn't stop to rest, her job would never be done. she rolled her eyes as she made a scathing comment about ceres. "aunt ceres should just let prosperina do what she wants. the poor thing just wants to stay with pluto. not that I know what she finds so appealing in the man. their falling in love is sweet and all, but if I had known it was going to make ceres such a menace I would've done something about it." of course, minerva wasn't going to explain. just thinking about the medicines and prayers she had to answer during the bitter winters was giving her a headache - and that was only the start of it! running her hand through her hair, minerva shook her dark waves. she had forgone her usual chain mail and helmet combination. she never really liked the outfit but only wore it for formal occasions. it was quite stifling. belatedly, she realized that venus had been partially responsible for pluto and prosperina's love. no doubt, venus had taken offense. but venus seemed to be in a particularly good mood so she probably wasn't going to blow up just yet. minerva had shot worse insults at her than that. even so, minerva made a point to think over what she says before she actually says it. "love is nice and all, really. no offense though, but love does make it hard for everyone." minerva said sincerely.
she heard the faint sounds of wings, but she paid it no mind. minerva had long ago recognized that as the sound of venus's pet...thing. whatever it was, she wasn't really sure - but it was spoiled silly. even her ward, voculus, had more discipline than it. although no one knew about her keeping a mortal boy under her wing, minerva was planning to make his presence known soon. of course, minerva was still unsure about her decision. voculus was still a little boy and would be a target to her enemies and rivals if she announced his presence. she'll have to wait until he was much older. the sound of the creature was getting louder, idly minerva wondered what its name was. she had been introduced to venus's pet before but for the life of her, she couldn't remember its name. venus wouldn't be happy about that.
feeling that the conversation was quickly going downhill, minerva quickly grasped at a new topic. hopefully, venus wouldn't try to continue on and start a debate. minerva may like a good argument once in a while, but she didn't like venus's twisted logic. sometimes, her half-sister just didn't make sense. she shouldn't be so surprised, after all, they stood for completely different aspects of life and rarely saw one another. it was no surprise that they rarely saw eye to eye. "so, what were you doing before you came here?" hopefully, she had been with juno or jupiter. she had been meaning to gauge their moods and temperaments before leaving. although she hated having to be the one to break up their fights, she'd rather break up their fights and end up at the wrong point of a lightning bolt than having to clean up the mess they were definitely going to leave behind when their fights get out of hand. those mortals already had their rulers to oppress them, they didn't need divine deities to push them into their graves even more.

_______________________________________________ venus looked at her, a smirk on the line of her lips, but it never appeared on her face. i should just step away now. it's sad that all we can talk about is commplace things. hmmm....i look alot like minerva. dark hair, blue eyes...there i go again! commenting on people's looks! i really have got to quit that. ah, well, i'll keep on trying. even though she was thinking in her mind, she listened intently to minerva, like she did when anyone was talking. it was rude if she didn't give her half-sister her attention, even if she wasn't typically deserving of it. but she had to admit, she could tell minerva was fighting against her usual negativity and being as polite and loving as she could find it in her heart to be to venus. for this, venus was proud of her.
venus watched the forced charade of friendliness and gave her a warm smile. she heard minerva's vaguely angry speech, "aunt ceres should just let prosperina do what she wants. the poor thing just wants to stay with pluto. not that I know what she finds so appealing in the man. their falling in love is sweet and all, but if I had known it was going to make ceres such a menace I would've done something about it." venus burst into laughter. "i agree with you on some of those points. but i must speak up when i say, that prosperina and pluto are quite well together and they would have eventually found each other, i'm quite sure. prosperina completes dear uncle pluto in a way that is an absolute mystery in the least."
she flashed a pleasant smile at minerva and then gestured towards the bend in the path, to where it led to the sitting places in her garden. "come. please, have a sit. jupiter only knows how such a pleasant talk between may never occur again." her eyes twinkled with humor and playful mischief. then, she began to made her way towards the benches. behind her, she heard minerva speak. at once, she whirled around and scoffed at her, an incredulous look on her face. "m'dear minerva! love is never easy. if it was, then everyone would have it and everyone would be perfect. love is one of the most important factors in all of our lives. it determines who we are, who we grow up to be. besides, it is love who decides who is the strongest and who is the weakest...."
she trailed off, her eyes glazed over in thought. but then, the expression vanished and she gave a bright smile towards her half-sister. and then turned back around to head towards the nearest wooden seat. her heart skipped a beat in excitement as she heard the loud beats of the wings coming closer. but she was caught again by the flurry of words that came out of minerva's mouth again. and instantly, her features darkened. "mother and father were in a fight again. jupiter tried to calm her and seemed to be looking for help, so i went to their palace to entertain them with dance and song. it helped calm juno a lot. you know how mother loves music. anyways, i came from there. and obviously the show must have worked because they are no longer fighting....for the moment."
darkness graced her features to an even further level. she snarled at nobody in particular, the words coming out bitterly, "as it were, jupiter and juno must figure something out. as i think it, i would rather jupiter give up all his lovers and just stay with juno. it seems he is the worst of the problems. i haven't really seen juno with any other man, or god." the atmosphere had become heavier, almost storm-like during her angry speech, but as she snapped out of her dangerous reverie, the blackness of fury leaving no trace on her beautiful face. she looked at minerva, an apology became written in her bright blue eyes and her mouth. "i'm sorry, minerva. i'll watch myself better."
she gave her a reassuring smile, hoping she had patially fixed anything that had been broken during her tiny rage. then, the goddess became curious. "what were you doing before you came to my gardens?" the air was ascending into a loud bout of heavy vibrations. xeratez had arrived. and with a gentle thud one would think impossible for a creature of his size, he landed in the clearing. the creature was massive, his head hanging at 22 feet from the ground. the gryphon was also beautiful. but it was a majestic, reverent, and terrifying kind of beauty. it was the kind of beauty that one looked on when they saw the lion or the bald eagle. a great respect and admiration for a wild creature. the deep green orbs looked at his creator, his mistress and he gave a soft whooting of recognization. venus looked at him, pride and love in her eyes.
but she was busy with minerva at the moment and gave a slight nod of her head. the eagle-sharp eyes got the tiny gesture and he folded his wonderfully patterned wings and laid day, stretching his font legs out and putting his eagle head on them. with his ears pricked and eyes alert, he looked much like a big dog silently abiding his time, patiently.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------- putting on a front, you might like that BUT WILL YOU LIKE ME WHEN I'M REAL -------------------------------------------------------------------------- she accepted venus's invitation for a seat and they made their way to sit down on a bench. it was rather odd to be in her half-sister's vicinity and not be arguing. it was rather...pleasant. as expected, venus went into a brief - thankfully - lecture about love and the benefits from it. she had opted to skim over the negative results of love. minerva paid it no mind. she made a convincing case, and if minerva didn't have to clean up the messes left behind by love, she would've believed it.
it seemed like the new topic she brought on was not a good one, judging by venus's dark expression. it made the usually beautiful and glamorous goddess look absolutely murderous. the new of juno and jupiter fighting once more brought all hopes of her escape crashing down on her. minerva sighed forlornly. however, she was proud that her father had decided to be the bigger man and try and calm juno down from her rages. minerva nodded when venus explained her part in jupiter's attempts to calm down the queen of gods. she couldn't help but feel a little jealous of venus. she seemed to get off so easily. all she had to do was sing and dance to appease people. her own attempts at being the mediator between the infamous pair were definitely not as pleasant.
however, venus grimaced even more and said vehemently, "as it were, jupiter and juno must figure something out. as i think it, i would rather jupiter give up all his lovers and just stay with juno. it seems he is the worst of the problems. i haven't really seen juno with any other man, or god." minerva remained unmoved as her half-sister ranted and didn't intend to speak until she finished. that was one thing she was good at. she may not be the one people go to for comfort, but she was the ideal person to go to for advice. she didn't mind that the atmosphere had become heavier, almost storm-like during her half-sister's heated rant, but when venus calmed down, the atmosphere lightened up as well. she looked at minerva, an apology became written in her bright blue eyes and her mouth. "i'm sorry, minerva. i'll watch myself better."
minerva nodded understandingly. venus wasn't the first person that came to her for a listening ear, although it was the first time, and she definitely wasn't going to be the last. minerva took the role as the shrink of all gods with ease and as a result, she knows everything about everyone. they trusted her to keep her mouth shut, of course. minerva didn't socialize so there was no danger that their thoughts would be revealed to anyone.
venus smiled once more and then asked with unveiled curiosity, "what were you doing before you came to my gardens?" minerva had the good sense to look vaguely guilty. she was supposed to be answering prayers and handing out advice, blessings, or punishment whenever the need arose. instead, she was lounging around, a victim to lethargy. before she could answer, the air shifted around as venus's pet made his presence known. it descended from the air with a gentle thud in the clearing. the creature was massive and minerva couldn't help but admire the gryphon. she still didn't know his name, and the look from his knowing green eyes told her that he knew too. he was magnificent and regal. while venus represented sensuous beauty, he was majestic and dangerous in his beauty. he gave a brief call to venus and minerva watched as venus gave him a look of deep affection. it seems as if venus loved this gryphon more than her men.
although she wanted more time to think about her response and mull it over a bit before answering her half-sister, venus seemed to remember that she was still here. a nod from venus told the gryphon that she was busy. the gryphon wasn't averse to just lying around in the sun and relaxing. he was rather well-trained and obedient, minerva noted. perhaps her earlier thoughts of the spoiled gryphon was a little off. "well, i was taking a break. mt. olympus is spoiling me." she admitted with a little laugh. "I still have to oversee the women's weaving in a little bit, the poets and writers need a lot more inspiration. even their love poetry is getting a bit stale, the doctors and herbalists are experimenting with medicines again and I have to make sure they don't kill their patients with their vile concoctions." she snorted. " and then i have a half a dozen more errands to do. i better leave mt. olympus before i turn into a lazy lout like the others here. " minerva waved her hand airily, looking out into the distance. "you've got it so easy, venus. it must be fun to play matchmaker and beautician all the time."

_______________________________________________ venus looked at minerva with none-too subtle glimmering eyes. she was seriously enjoying this talk with her sister. it was nice, calming to talk to minerva is such a friendly fashion, no interruptions, even if some of it was forced. she listened to minerva's answer and couldn't help but laugh a little as well. "surely not!" she said in mock surprise, but then went into chuckles. their laughter died at about the same time. then, venus lapsed into silence, her alertness grasping each of her half-sister's words. and the more she listened, the more she felt she was being slighted, however small it may be. it felt to her like minerva was taking her duties and rubbing them in her face, about her importance.
"I still have to oversee the women's weaving in a little bit, the poets and writers need a lot more inspiration. even their love poetry is getting a bit stale, the doctors and herbalists are experimenting with medicines again and I have to make sure they don't kill their patients with their vile concoctions. and then i have a half a dozen more errands to do. i better leave mt. olympus before i turn into a lazy lout like the others here." yes, venus was feeling very small now, thanks to minerva's words. it showed in her expression, which had become very stony. she looked at minerva, her voice calm and light, the total opposite of her features. "minerva...i'll have you know that my life is not as easy as you might think."
hearing the distress in his mistress's voice, xeratez went into a sitting position, stretching his front legs, and turned his head to observe minerva and venus. his eyes were bright and knowing. minerva and venus never got along. this was nothing new. but nevertheless, xeratez watched them with close interest. venus's peripheral vision caught his motion and her head followed suit to look at him. she couldn't help but laugh. "xeratez...always watching over me." she rolled her eyes at her pet, whose eyes were vigilant yet smiling themselves. then, she turned back to minerva, her upsetting gone for a moment. "minerva. i respect you. please have the courtesy to return the favor. i promise you. being the goddess of love and beauty is not all what it's cut out ot be."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------- putting on a front, you might like that BUT WILL YOU LIKE ME WHEN I'M REAL -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ah, there we go. she knew that the bit of friendly conversation was all that was going to happen. it was rare that venus and herself were seen in the same vicinity without some fight going on. it was about time that one of them exploded. this was just the beginning. minerva didn't like picking fights, but it seemed like her mouth had gotten the better of her once more. it was to be expected, so minerva didn't feel bad for ruining the pleasant atmosphere between them, after all, they always fought. if they didn't fight, it was a clear sign that the world was going to end.
minerva smiled breezily at the slightly enraged venus. venus wasn't even trying to hide her affronted pride. minerva shrugged, "i apologize, venus. the stress is getting to me." she didn't sound repentant of her slight towards her half-sister, and didn't bother to even try making her apology sound sincere. venus wanted her to believe that her life wasn't all fuzzy animals and sweets? minerva couldn't help but roll her eyes. sure, love was a tricky thing to handle, but how hard was it to look beautiful?
she couldn't help but be curious though. it was in her nature, after all. she was the goddess of wisdom and although she had never taken an interest in another deity's work, she was interested now. let's see if venus can prove that she had to work hard. "although, i am curious, venus." she began, a haughty tone seeped into her rich voice. "what do you do besides ordering cupid around to fire arrows at unsuspecting mortals?"
idly, she picked at the fabric of her dress while she waited for her reply. no doubt, venus would take offense again. her gryphon was probably going to try and attack the one who was causing her distress, and in this case, it meant minerva herself. she wasn't threatened by a gryphon, of course, but would mourn its death. it is a magnificent and loyal creature. minerva idly considered getting a pet as well. but it will have to be inconspicuous and able to keep up with her travels. it will also have to be friendly enough for children since she intends for Voculus to meet it. she'll have to refer to her books of course. "to tell you the truth, i'm a little disillusioned about love." she smiled inwardly, no doubt, venus was going to get back at her for what she's saying. she'll have to be on the look out for wayward arrows for the next few days. if she doesn't, she'll probably end up mooning over a mortal, or something like that. "and don't tell me that it's because i've never loved before, venus. i'm quite satisfied." minerva laughed.
